Arsenal legend Thierry Henry says people doubted Donyell Malen

Donyell Malen joined Arsenal as a teenager back in the summer of 2015 from Ajax.

The Dutch forward was one of the best players in the Gunners academy back then. He was fantastic at youth level and caught the eye of everyone who watched him play.

Thierry Henry was doing his coaching badges at Arsenal back then, and he was given the opportunity to work with the young players at the club.

Malen was one of them, and Henry is delighted with how well he has progressed since he left Arsenal back in 2017.

Speaking on last night, the legendary Frenchman said: “I saw him at Arsenal, coming from Ajax where, at times, I guess (at an) early age when you are good it’s very difficult to handle the pressure.

“It was a bit difficult for him to handle the pressure at Ajax, so he came to Arsenal. I had him for a year because I was passing my badges there. it didn’t work at Arsenal for him. I thought he had some quality but at Arsenal you have a lot of quality there.

“Then he went to Eindhoven and played for Young PSV, that is the second team. He ended up doing brilliantly, which I’m very happy because at the very beginning, people were doubting him. He trusted himself and his quality and with his family, he made it happen. He won the league with Eindhoven.

“After that, he had to come back from a bad knee injury. Now he plays for Holland. He scored tonight. It must have been emotional to play against Eindhoven, a team that he won the league with almost six years ago, so I am very happy for him.”

Malen has developed since leaving Arsenal

After Arsenal sold Malen for £500,000 (), he developed into an excellent player.

The Dutchman was incredible for PSV, scoring 55 goals and providing 24 assists in 116 games.

In his final season at Eindhoven, he scored 27 goals and provided 10 assists in all competitions. That made him a wanted man, and Borussia Dortmund secured his signature in 2021.

Malen has had tough times in Germany since his move, but he is currently having a very good season.

He has already scored 11 times this term, and there is a chance he can come up against Arsenal in the next round of the Champions League if both sides go through.
