The Lazio star enjoyed a stellar campaign in Serie A this season, scoring 36 league goals and adding a further three across the Europa League and Coppa Italia.

Newcastle were apparently keen on Immobile back in June, with claiming a £50m bid was being lined up by the prospective new Magpies owners.

And speaking to today, Immobile has admitted that contact was made.

“During the period in which there was talk of the possible purchase of Newcastle by the Sheikh’s fund they called my agent, Alessandro Moggi.

“Then the Premier League did not approve that proposal, or the fund withdrew, I don’t remember well. I know they were also looking for an Italian coach, [Massimiliano] Allegri or [Luciano] Spalletti.”

Immobile’s comments on a new coach are also interesting, indicating that if a takeover does eventually go through, then Steve Bruce might not have long in the hot seat.

Ciro Immobile is one of the shining lights of Europe when it comes to striking talent. The goals speak for themselves and he has cemented himself in the last few seasons as a world-class goal-getter.

So, for Newcastle fans to see this, it’s probably a little bit gutting. He’d have been adored on Tyneside, too.

The talk of a new manager is also interesting. Steve Bruce has done well at St James’ Park but it seems the new owners had other ideas.

At least on that front, Bruce has got a reprieve for now.
