It appears Sunderland may have missed out on two of their striker targets this summer. Lawrence Shankland and James Wilson have both headed elsewhere despite recent links with Sunderland.
Shankland had an excellent campaign at Ayr United last term. The Scottish striker scored 34 goals in 41 games for Ayr last season and was available on a free transfer.Sunderland boss Jack Ross is a big fan of the 23-year-old and hoped to bring him to the Stadium of Light this summer.
However, Shankland has decided to stay in Scotland. The striker has joined Dundee United on a free transfer.

that Sunderland may have expressed an interest in ex-Manchester United striker James Wilson this week. The frontman was also a free agent after his deal at Old Trafford came to an end.
However, he has agreed to remain at Aberdeen, with whom he had a loan spell last term.
But Sunderland fans on Twitter are taking the news quite well. Plenty of Black Cats supporters felt that Wilson, in particular, was not at the level needed to thrive at Sunderland.
Shankland, although a prospect, is unproven in English football and many felt he would have been a gamble from Ross as a major first-team player.
Here is some of the best reaction from Twitter…
If weve missed out on Wilson & Shankland then so be it whats
Wilson done since he scored on his man u debut 5 years ago & Shankland would have been 3rd choice to begin with had he joined. Hes went to a club where he will likely be 1st choice. Would either improve us?— Steven Elliott (@ElliottSAFC)
All the bedwetters on here moaning about not signing Shankland or Wilson have no evidence or proof that we were even in for them just paper talk. 2 we have signed were not in these papers.

Didn’t want Wilson at all the lad has done nothing in his career let’s be honest, suppose if he had we’d have been nowhere near him, wasn’t confident in us getting shankland tbh wasn’t really bothered either if I’m being truthful didn’t know much about him really ??⚪?

Don’t care about Wilson but Shankland is a bit annoying I think we need Marquis though
— George (@SafcGeorge6)
Just a thought, but (if rumour is true), maybe Shankland preferred a nigh on guaranteed first team start. May well not have got that at These things matter to most footballers.

Everyone wetting themselves over shankland, ffs he’s hardly proven at a high level. Get over and move on 2 the next 1
— Dave. Pentland (@dpentl_)
True but cant see Wilson being a genuine target and shankland would have been a signing similar to the GK we got yesterday a u23 with view of getting into 1st team. At Dundee he will be 1st choice at 1 of the best sides in the division so a chance to put himself in the window

The worrying part is if they were high on our list of targets. Not bothered that we arent signing them
— Parkersafc (@Parkersafc)
He would’ve been third choice. Plus we play horrible, defensive football and don’t create chances for strikers. Don’t blame him.

No disrespect to the clubs involved but honestly if he’s chosen them..
A…were we really after him?
B…how ambitious or confident in your ability are you?
Ditto Wilson too.— Rob Bell (@RobBell09761311)
TBH not sure if we were in for these two or not but more than happy to have missed out.

Move on for me , dont know a great deal other than what I read on here. I question did we ever make a formal bid as really I dont think Dundee Utd can be a comparison to playing for SAFC , no snobbery intended just fact for me.
