‘There’s no need’… Alan Shearer baffled by what 24-year-old Arsenal star did vs Liverpool yesterday

Alan Shearer was left baffled by what Kai Havertz did as Arsenal were knocked out of the FA Cup by Liverpool on Sunday.

The Gunners were dealt a blow ahead of the tie, with Gabriel Jesus missing the game due to injury. With Eddie Nketiah struggling for form – and perhaps being rested for the Premier League – Kai Havertz was given a chance to impress in the striker role against the Reds.

One of Havertz’s best performances for Arsenal arguably came when he started up front in the Community Shield at the start of the season.

And in truth, Arsenal could have really done with the 24-year-old taking the opportunity. The goals have largely dried up for Mikel Arteta’s side in recent weeks.

Unfortunately, it was another frustrating display for Arsenal. And Havertz was one of those who missed some outstanding opportunities.

Perhaps the best of the lot came when Declan Rice dispossessed Alexis Mac Allister just before the half-hour mark. The ball fell to Martin Odegaard, who then played in Havertz on the edge of the box.

The pass was seemingly perfect for Havertz to immediately get a strike away. However, the Germany international decided to take a touch and then try and beat a couple of the Liverpool defenders. And ultimately, the shot was largely blocked.

Certainly, speaking on , Alan Shearer could not understand why Havertz did not take the shot on sooner.

“Too much time. Far too much time needed. I didn’t think he needed the touch,” he said. “It was great pressing again from Declan Rice. And the pass there from Odegaard to switch it. He’s just got to hit it. There’s no need to take a touch there. The pass is soft enough. It’s in his way, just go and hit it.”

Gunners wondering once again how best to use summer signing

Havertz had accumulated some credit from late November, scoring a number of goals. It appeared that Havertz was well on his way towards silencing his doubters.

However, the last few games have reminded many of the issues within his game. Technically, he can be fantastic.

But finding Havertz’s best position in this Arsenal side is so challenging. And as Sunday proved, those of us who wondered whether playing up front may get the best out of him were left very disappointed.
