‘The type we like’: Lijnders in awe of Liverpool prospect, some fans have made Coutinho comparisons
Liverpool assistant manager Pepijn Lijnders has waxed lyrical about Anfield academy prodigy Curtis Jones ahead of the Reds’ League Cup clash tonight.
The 19-year-old midfielder has come through the ranks at Liverpool and has come a very long way in the last two years, culminating in a great 2020 for him so far.
In early 2018, Jones signed his first professional contract at Anfield and made his Under-23s debut.

This year, the young maestro scored Liverpool’s winning goal against Merseyside rivals Everton in the FA Cup third round.
Jones also became the Reds’ youngest ever captain in the FA Cup fourth-round replay against Shrewsbury, and finished the 2019-20 campaign with in all competitions.
This term, Jones has made three senior appearances and already has two goals under his belt, both against Lincoln in the League Cup.
With Liverpool expected to field a much-changed side against Arsenal tonight, Jones is likely to start.
“He’s the type of player we really like,” Lijnders said of Jones to the Reds . “His call-up to the U21s proves his development over the last year.
“He’s the type we like because of his courage, because of his bravery, because of his self-confidence – it’s the proper confidence and not the wrong one.

“Self-confidence comes with attitude, with training, with investing with only thinking about improvement points.
“He’s the type of midfielder, probably one of the most offensive midfielders we have. He has risk, young blood and if you look closely in the games, he’s one of the first ones who has this surprise movement in the box.
“He’s probably always the first one who shoots and if he keeps scoring, he can be a midfielder with real goals as well – and that’s something we really like.”
TBR View:
Liverpool already have a star-studded team as it is but what’s potentially even more exciting for the Reds fanbase is the abundance of talented players coming through the ranks, of which Jones is one of the most highly rated.
There are high hopes for Jones – contracted to Liverpool until the summer of 2024 – at Anfield and, earlier this year, recognised his talent and potential by naming him at number 27 in their NxGn 2020 list.
And if that doesn’t give an idea as to just how talented he is, multiple Liverpool fans have compared his style of play to Philippe Coutinho.
Every single time I see Curtis Jones play I think, damn this kid is a Coutinho regen. They play so similarly.

A modified Coutinho. Keep improving Jones. The future of Liverpool.

Curtis Jones is an ideal replacement for Coutinho because the way he cuts inside from the wings and enters the box dribbling through defenders. Amazing!
