‘The toughest ever’: Former Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers on his first impression of Scott Brown

It’s no surprise that Brendan Rodgers has fond memories of Scott Brown.

The man currently spearheading Leicester’s push for second place in the English Premier League won two league titles in Scotland with Brown as his captain, and the midfielder was instrumental in their famous 2016/17 ‘Invincibles’ campaign.

After 14 years at the club and over 600 appearances, Brown’s time at Celtic is finally drawing to a close.

It was confirmed on Thursday that he would be leaving at the end of the season to join new Aberdeen manager Stephen Glass as player-coach at Pittodrie.

Rodgers is full of praise for Brown’s footballing ability, and has reflected on his first impressions of a player who was at the heart of Celtic’s nine-in-a-row success.

Speaking in the , Rodgers said: “From the first day I met him, he was amazing for me.

“I could talk all day about him because I can’t speak highly enough of Scott. He was absolutely incredible during my time at Celtic, especially in terms of his mentality.

“If I’m talking about my ideal footballer, with the top attribute being mental toughness – Scott’s there.

“He’s the toughest player, mentally, I’ve ever worked with. He was just a joy and an unbelievable leader at Celtic.

“He’ll go down as one of the greatest captains in the history of the club, when you look at his success.

“And what doesn’t get talked about so much, because of the role he’s had, is that he’s actually a top player.

“Scott is an outstanding footballer.

“He decided to stay in Scotland for his whole career. But there’s no question that he could have played for any of the top teams in England. He was that good.

“I sensed right away in our first meeting that he was for me. I’d never met Scott before.

“Like most people, I’d only seen his stare! I’d only really seen the villain role that he sometimes plays against other teams in Scotland.

“But he was the club captain so I was keen to meet him in private.

“We met in London and from the first minute he walked through the door, he was a charming guy.

“You could see his passion for Celtic and that he wanted to succeed. From that evening, I got everything and more from Scott.

“He was brilliant for me at the heart of the team.”

Brown still has a chance to add this season’s Scottish Cup to his list of honours, but even without one last piece of silverware he will leave Celtic Park with 10 league titles, six Scottish Cups and six League Cups.
