The time Sir Alex Ferguson subbed himself on to play for Manchester United and why he did it

Sir Alex Ferguson cemented himself as a bonafide football legend at Manchester United.

Holding the reins at Old Trafford from 1986 to 2013, the man from Glasgow oversaw 1559 games in total as manager of the Red Devils remarkably winning 928 of them, along with 340 draws and 291 defeats.

The 82-year-old also won a record 13 Premier League titles for Manchester United during his reign, along with two UEFA Champions League successes, five FA Cup titles, four League Cups and many other pieces of silverware, along with countless individual awards.

At this point in time, many are aware of what Sir Alex Ferguson achieved as manager of Manchester United, but few will know that he actually made an appearance as a player for the Red Devils.

Why Sir Alex Ferguson played for Manchester United

Almost 40 years ago now, the Scot hilariously subbed himself on to play for Manchester United in a mid-season friendly against Somerset Trojans, despite the fact he was 45 years of age.

Ferguson’s Manchester United side were taking on Somerset Trojans during a tour of the Caribbean back in November 1987 in his first campaign in charge of the Red Devils, beating Bermuda by a 4-1 scoreline in the first match of the trip.

However, during the second game of Manchester United’s visit to the Caribbean, both Ferguson, who almost signed Ronaldinho, and his assistant, Archie Knox aged 40 at the time entered the fray.

Arthur Albiston who made 379 appearances for Manchester United told back in 2019 that Knox came on to inflict revenge after Gary Walsh was the subject of a nasty kick to the head.

“Archie was angry at the Walsh challenge and wanted to make his presence known. Had he been ten years younger he might have made a tackle!/p>

It is believed Ferguson also came on for that reason having done so during an earlier visit to the Caribbean while in charge of St Mirren, when he subbed himself on to exact revenge on a Guayana defender who was giving Robert Torrence some incredibly rough treatment, as revealed in his book.

How Sir Alex Ferguson performed in his one and only Manchester United appearance

Ferguson, who Wayne Rooney said was inferior to Louis van Gaal tactically, came close to scoring with a header in that game, while Knox surprisingly netted a fantastic goal from distance as Manchester United won their second game of that trip to the Caribbean by another 4-1 scoreline.

Ultimately, the Manchester United legend had little time to make an impact with just 21 minutes remaining of the friendly when he came on although we doubt a man aged 45 would have lasted for much longer on a pitch full of professional athletes, and Knox of course.
