The three best and worst performers in Tottenham’s 2-1 win over Manchester United

The worst

Wayne Rooney

Despite scoring United’s only goal, Wayne Rooney was poor overall. He looked as though he couldn’t keep up with the pace of the game and kept committing cynical fouls that could have easily seen him pick up a second yellow card.

Michael Carrick

Another Englishman that had a poor afternoon was Michael Carrick. The former Spurs man failed to penentrate the Tottenham defence with his passing and he looked slow on the ball throughout proceedings. Often dropping into a back three to get involved, Carrcik sat far to deep to hurt Spurs and ultimately failed in helping his team transition from defence to attack.

Chris Smalling

Yet another England international who performed poorly, Chris Smalling continues to look out his depth against tough opposition. Aside from failing to stop Harry Kane steering in Spurs second goal, Smalling’s negativity hindered United’s attacking play. His passes often went sideways or backwards, slowing the pace of the Red Devils’ movement.
