The simple reason why Ben White would be Liverpool’s main centre-back transfer target

Liverpool are continuously being linked with a move for a new centre-back this month, despite repeated assertions from Jurgen Klopp that Liverpool are unlikely to make such a move.

Indeed, plenty of names have been linked with a January move to Anfield – including the likes of Sven Botman, Max Wober, and David Carmo.

However, if Liverpool are to spring a surprise and bring in another centre-back this month none of these seem likely additions.

Instead, Brighton defender Ben White is the most likely player Liverpool would move for with one simple reason why.

Liverpool are at their maximum for non-homegrown players in the current first-team picture with 17 players fighting that description.

Unless the Reds lose a player like Divock Origi, Xherdan Shaqiri, or Adrian, bringing in another foreigner is simply not an option.

Instead, Liverpool are likely to target a player who meets the homegrown quota, which Poole-born White undoubtedly does.

that White was high up on Liverpool’s transfer target list having impressed scouts with his exceptional form at Leeds in the Championship last season.

In the summer, when Leeds tried to sign White permanently, they were quoted upwards of £40 million,, but if Liverpool see him as a long-term partner for Virgil van Dijk it is surely a deal that will be considered.

The fact he meets the homegrown player quota just makes him an even more enviable acquisition.
