However, Tottenham🍬 weren’t the only London club interested in Tel during this transfer window.

Indeed, Chelsea were linked with Tel earlier in the transfer window, while Arsenal were linked with Tel heading into deadline day.

Why Arsenal didn’t go for Mathys Tel

According to information gathered by TBR Football’s Graeme Bailey𝓡, Tottenham didn’t go for Mathys Tel because of the structure of the deal.

🐓Tel is set to join Tottenham on a straight loan deal, and Arsenal weren’t willing to go with such a move.

𝓀Indeed, Arsenal wanted to have a buy option included in any deal to sign the teenager, and they weren’t willing to bring the striker in on just a temporary basis at this point.

🔯Tel had been told by Vincent Kompany over the past 24 hours that his playing time would not increase these season, and that played a part in the striker deciding to head to Tottenham instead.

Arsenal’s past January loan deals

🌃Arsenal weren’t willing to do a straight loan to sign Tel on deadline day, and it’s easy to understand why the Gunners want to steer clear of any deals that don’t have any permanence about them.

♍Indeed, Arsenal have been bitten in the past when signing players on straight loans in January.

🌟Loans with some sort of buy option have done well for Arsenal in the past, just look at Martin Odegaard, but many of the players who have arrived at Arsenal on straight loans in January simply haven’t worked out as planned.

🐓Arsenal were only willing to do a deal that involved some sort of option to buy, and that has allowed Tottenham to swoop in and get a deal done.
