The real reason why Manchester United are signing Matheus Cunha instead of Viktor Gyokeres has now emerged

Viktor Gyokeres has been a target for Manchester United since Ruben Amorim became their head coach.

The Sweden international is one of the most prolific strikers on the planet. He has been incredible at Sporting CP and is almost guaranteed to move to a bigger club this summer.

Gyokeres has interest from Arsenal and Manchester United, and as things stand, it is Mikel Arteta’s side who are the favourites to sign him.

That is why the Red Devils are closing in on a move to sign Matheus Cunha from Wolves instead of the Swede at Sporting.

What Viktor Gyokeres told Manchester United about summer transfer

Manchester United had a shocking 2024/25 season.

The Red Devils finished 16th in the Premier League table and also produced a terrible performance in the Europa League final against Tottenham Hotspur.

Rasmus Hojlund had a really poor game for United yet again in Bilbao, and the priority this summer has to be to sign a better striker.

Gyokeres would be ideal, but the have revealed that the Swede directly told Manchester United that he has no interest in a move to Old Trafford.

That is because he wants to remain in the Champions League, which is something that United cannot offer after they failed to win the Europa League.

The report adds that it was only after learning Gyokeres’ stance that Manchester United decided to push to sign Cunha from Wolves.

Viktor Gyokeres could join Arsenal

Amorim would’ve surely loved to reunite with Viktor Gyokeres at Old Trafford, but it doesn’t look like that will happen this summer.

Manchester United will have to look elsewhere, but what will be painful for them is if the big Swede decides to join another Premier League side.

Arsenal can offer Gyokeres what he is looking for – Champions League football. The Gunners are challenging for the big trophies as well.

That is why the report claims that a move to the Emirates this summer could happen if Arsenal decide to go down that route in the coming weeks.
