‘The problem you’ve got’… Tony Pulis hopes reports about Newcastle man do not come true

Eddie Howe is coming under increasing pressure at Newcastle United after failing to get anywhere near last season’s successes in the Premier League – with The Toon sitting way down in tenth place.

It is some way off last season, when the Toon broke into the top four – qualifying for Champions League football. Incredibly, sitting four points ahead of Liverpool, who are fighting for the title this season.

Newcastle have shown glimpses this season, performing well in a really tough Champions League group which included Dortmund, Milan and PSG. But, they were knocked out. Europe remains a possibility.

Reports state that the pressure is ramping up on Howe. Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi is being considered as a possible replacement, while Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann has also been linked with the Toon.

Tony Pulis discusses future of Newcastle manager Eddie Howe

There is absolutely no doubt that Howe has done a wonderful job as Newcastle manager. But, pressure will be on Howe to deliver immediate returns on Tyneside – after his stunning first full season in charge.

The Saudi Arabian PIF, and Amanda Staveley, do not come across as the most-patient people in world football. Having tasted Champions League nights at Newcastle, they’ll want European football this term.

Failue to do that and Newcastle’s demanding owners may think this summer could be a chance to bring in a really big-name manager. It would be harsh on Howe, and Pulis gave his take on the rumours.

“He’s done a fantastic job. The problem you’ve got is, Eddie has overachieved massively. Feed people steak and then go back to mince pies, it’s not easy,”

“He’s a smashing manager, a good person as well and he’s got a great club. A great vehicle to drive. He’s had this blip, bad run of injuries, it’s not as in-depth as it should have been to cope with Europe.”

What would Newcastle board deem acceptable for Howe?

Newcastle have a number of players that will feel they are Champions League-quality players. Bruno Guimaraes, Alex Isak, Kieran Trippier, Sven Botman and more. Failure to get Europe could see them go.

The board will know that – and if Newcastle do fail to even get the Conference League, then perhaps it will be a case of having to bring in a big-name manager to keep the likes of Bruno and Isak happy.

But, if Newcastle put a late run together and squeeze into the Conference League or the Europa League, then it is still a very successful season. Eighth place could mean Europe come the end of the season.
