‘The only positive’: Some Tottenham fans credit one player despite 1-0 loss

Tottenham suffered a surprise 1-0 defeat away to Portuguese opposition Pacos de Ferreira on Thursday night – but some of the club’s fans on Twitter did at least give credit to Bryan Gil for his performance.

Spurs manager Nuno Espirto Santo decided to make 11 changes tonight from the team that beat Manchester City at the weekend. There were certainly plenty of individuals that wasted their chance to impress.

The north London club were beaten 1-0 in the first leg of the Europa Conference League play-off tie. Fortunately, they have next week to turn the result around in London and try qualify for the group stages.

Lucas Silva was the hero for the hosts with his goal on the stroke of half time as he scored a composed finish after breaking beyond the Spurs defence.

It means Nuno may need to put out a much strong XI next week to bail them out of trouble. They know it’s only a small aggregate deficit and have some top stars waiting in the wings.

Bryan Gil debut catches eye on bleak night for Spurs

There weren’t many positive to take from the European defeat, but a selection of Spurs supporters on social media believe Gil was one.

The 20-year-old, who was signed from Sevilla in the summer, made his competitive Spurs debut in attack and showed some really bright individual moments.

He’s a left-footed winger that has great close control and is direct with his dribbling, so there is a lot of excitement around him.

There was just a lack of cohesion between the players in the end, something which may be down to a lack of football together.

Here are some fans at least naming Gil as a bright spark:
