The Ibrox factor that Rangers goalscorer says could see him extend his stay

At the age of 38, Jermain Defoe has finally become a league champion.

Prior to Rangers winning the Scottish Premiership earlier this month, the forward had only Tottenham’s League Cup win from 2008 in his trophy cabinet.

Having finally scratched that itch at an age when many outfield players have hung up their boots, the Englishman could be forgiven for calling it a day.

Instead, he is keen to remain at Ibrox beyond the end of his contract, which expires this summer.

He’s made 14 appearances in this title-winning season, but isn’t keen on leaving Glasgow without having played in front of the fans again.

Speaking on , Defoe said: “I’ve had this discussion with a few senior lads at the club, you speak about what you’re doing.

“The big thing for me, this season has been so different with no fans in the stadium, if any player was thinking of finishing… to play a season without fans it’s like training games.

“It would be hard to finish with no fans. I’ll listen to my body as well and see how I feel.

“This season, I’ve only had a couple of injuries, nothing major. I’m quite relaxed about it. I want to play another season in front of the fans.

“This season has been special, I don’t know how I’ll top that. Just a personal one to finish in front of the fans.”

Reflecting on the difference in mentality between Rangers and former club Tottenham, Defoe said:  “You have to win and bring silverware, otherwise it’s not good enough. When you actually achieve that and the feeling you get from that, wow man.

“I wish I had that earlier on in my career.”

Rangers return to action on April 4 when they welcome Cove Rangers to Ibrox in the third round of the Scottish Cup.
