The four Leeds outcasts who have two months to avoid the January axe
Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa likes to work with a thin squad but there still could be some January departures.
With Leeds pushing for promotion and Bielsa keen to keep his starting line-up, there are some players who might be axed in January. Only two and a half months remain until the transfer window opens, so some players are playing for their future.
Here are four Leeds players who are likely to be offloaded in January unless something drastic changes.
Ouasim Bouy
Bouy was a curious signing. The former Netherlands U19 international joined Leeds from Juventus having previously played for a number of European sides. Since then, he has been out on loan twice but never played for the Whites.
The 26-year-old operates in defence or midfield but Bielsa doesn’t seem to be interested. He has not been given a squad number and a January departure looks inevitable.
Eunan O’Kane
O’Kane is another player who has not been given a squad number this season. The Irish midfielder is way down the pecking order after a string of injuries and Bielsa has no plans to use him.
Kalvin Phillips, Jamie Shackleton and Adam Forshaw have all been excellent in the middle of the park. There is no future for O’Kane at Leeds and a permanent departure would be the best option for his career.
Jack Clarke
Tottenham Hotspur snapped Clarke up from Leeds in the summer and immediately loaned him back. But the homegrown Leeds boy has struggled to make the matchday squad since his return – due to loan restrictions.
The 18-year-old has only played two games in the cup since coming back to Leeds on loan. He has been an unused substitute in the last two league games so Spurs might recall him unless something changes.
Lewie Coyle
For the third time, Leeds sent academy product Coyle to Fleetwood Town on loan. The attack-minded right-back is now a fan favourite for the Trawlermen but his Leeds hopes are slim.
Coyle is only on loan until January – when Leeds will have to make a decision. It could be a permanent move to Fleetwood for the 23-year-old (where he has played over 100 times) unless Bielsa gives him an unlikely lifeline in the Leeds side.
