‘The deal was never completed’: 48-capped star says ‘poor’ decision denied him 2015 Celtic transfer
Aston Villa winger Trezeguet has revealed he was close to a transfer to Celtic back in 2015.
In an interview , the Egypt international claims that Celtic made an offer for him six years ago. Trezeguet was one of Africa’s top prospects in 2015, and the Hoops were keen on the attacker.
However, Trezeguet revealed that a deal fell through as Celtic weren’t willing to meet Al Ahly’s financial demands. The Hoops seemingly offered less money for the attacker than other clubs.
Instead, the winger joined Belgian giants R.S.C. Anderlecht before signing for Villa in 2019 for a reported fee of £8.75m . Since then, Trezeguet has made 63 appearances for the Birmingham-based club, scoring nine goals and assisting five.
The 26-year-old Premier League star said: “When I decided I was going to go to Europe, there were a lot of clubs who were interested.
The winger added: “One of them was Celtic and I was going to sign for them. But the deal was never completed because of the poor financial compensation the Scottish club offered Al Ahly.�/p>
Celtic should have coughed up the money for Trezeguet transfer
Whilst the Villa attacker was largely a substitute player for Dean Smith’s side last season, there’s no denying that the 48-time Egyptian international would have been a sensational addition to Celtic.
His best season in professional football saw Trezeguet scored 15 goals and assist eight more for Turkish side Kasimpasa. And in a division like the Scottish Premiership, the attacker could have been a menace for opponents.
Indeed, whilst Celtic were the top dogs in Scotland in 2015, their exploits in Europe could have been more successful had they had a player like Trezeguet amongst their ranks.
