‘The best’… Graeme Souness blown away by £170,000-a-week Tottenham Hotspur player

Graeme Souness has made a big claim about Tottenham Hotspur and England international attacking midfielder James Maddison.

The Liverpool legend and former Spurs prospect has explained why Maddison needs to start for England when he is fit.

So, what has Graeme Souness said about Tottenham Hotspur and England star James Maddison? Let’s take a look.

What’s the story?

Well, according to Graeme Souness, England head coach Gareth Southgate has to find a place for Tottenham Hotspur playmaker James Maddison in the starting lineup.

Maddison is injured at the moment, but, according to the pundit, when the Spurs attacking midfielder is fit, he could form a good partnership with star striker Harry Kane.

The pundit believes that Maddison has been “the best creative player in English football” for a number of years.

Souness wrote in : “Get another attacking player in there. They have been lacking creativity at times and the best creative player in English football has been, for a number of years, James Maddison.

“OK, Maddison is injured, but there has been a reluctance to throw him in. I would play him just off Harry Kane, and Kane would love playing with him. Southgate has the players to win tournaments and this, for him, is a wonderful opportunity.”

Maddison has scored 46 goals and given 37 assists in 174 appearances in the Premier League so far in his career.

Tottenham Hotspur star James Maddison could struggle to start for England

I believe that Tottenham Hotspur playmaker James Maddison could struggle to start for England when all the players are fit and available.

While Graeme Souness does make a good point about Harry Kane and Maddison potentially playing well together, the problem is that there are many other top-quality attacking players in the Three Lions’ squad.

England head coach Gareth Southgate is very likely to play a 4-3-3 formation at the Euro 2024 finals.

Kane will start down the middle in attack. Arsenal star Bukayo Saka is certainly going to start on the right wing. Marcus Rashford could feature on the left.

Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice are certain to start in midfield. Trent Alexander-Arnold could feature in the middle of the park as well.

Bellingham is playing in an advanced midfield role at Real Madrid and is scoring goals for fun.

The youngster could be given a similar role for England. That would mean no place for Maddison as the playmaker in the Three Lions’ starting lineup.

I know that Maddison has been superb for Spurs this season, but I do not see the £170,000-a-week () playmaker starting for England if everyone else is fit and available to play.
