The Ange Postecoglou signing who will have cost Celtic £2,726 per minute despite being signed for free
Today is a day for highlighting the amount of money Celtic have and how much money they have wasted over the past few years.
Celtic’s financial picture has never looked so healthy. And despite highlighting the fact that the club are wasting over £100k per week on players that make next to no contribution, Celtic are still recording record profits.
Out of the players that are sitting about doing nothing and still picking up a hefty wage, one, by the time his contract expires next month, will have cost the club almost £3000 per minute he has played for the club.
How much money Celtic have wasted on James McCarthy
The Irish midfielder was one of Ange Postecoglou’s first signings as the manager of Celtic. Out of contract, the Hoops picked him up on a free as the Australian looked to rebuild after the disastrous COVID season.
On a reported £14k per week [] over the course of the last two and a half seasons, McCarthy has played 28 times for Celtic.
In those games, the 33-year-old has played a combined 801 minutes of first-team football. [] When his contract continues towards the end of the season, McCarthy will have earned a cool £2.184m.

Which converts into £2,726 per minute of first-team action played. Or £163,560 per hour. Whichever way you look at it, it is a shocking waste of money.
Now it has to be said, none of this is the player’s fault. He was offered this contract by the club and he has every right to every penny he has been paid.
The fault of this deal lies with the people at Celtic who signed off on it. I’ll let you all guess who that was. And to think, he still has a year left to run after this season so that figure could potentially rise.
Anyway, if Celtic have designs on getting quality in then they need to get players like McCarthy off the wage bill to do so.
