‘That’s what fans want’: Agbonlahor absolutely loved what Gerrard did right after Aston Villa scored
Gabby Agbonlahor spoke on yesterday about the passion Steven Gerrard showed in his first Aston Villa game.
It was a difficult game to go into for the new Villa boss on Saturday. Brighton are never an easy team to beat, even when you’re playing at home. However, Gerrard set his side up really well and his players got him a well-deserved win.
Right from the first whistle, you could see Villa’s players full of energy. It almost looked like they wanted to prove a point, but their attempts to break the deadlock in the first half failed, and that gave rise to a few nerves.
Not a lot changed in the second half until Gerrard brought on Ashley Young. The substitute set up Ollie Watkins for the opener and the Aston Villa boss’ celebration on the touchline told the world how big of a relief that was.
Agbonlahor raves about Gerrard on the touchline
The ex-Villa star absolutely loved the passion Gerrard showed on the touchline throughout the game, especially after they scored. Agbonlahor believes that’s exactly what the fans want to see every week from their manager.
He said: “He’s (Gerrard) going to have that effect on the players, he’s going to have that aura about him, first of all we’re going to keep clean sheets, then we’ve got to score goals because we’ve got Danny Ings, we’ve got Ollie Watkins, we’ve got Leon Bailey, John McGinn can score goals.
“What I see is that passion on the sidelines, just the passion from Gerrard, on the sidelines for the whole game, interacting with the fans during the game. His celebration for the goal, it was like he’d won a cup final!
“That’s what fans want to see and I think he’s going to do a great job for Aston Villa.”

Gerrard’s passion on the touchline is definitely something Aston Villa fans loved in his first game in charge. Villa Park was rocking and the club’s new boss’ energy on the touchline definitely helped.
The Englishman’s focus will now be on the next game, which is against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park. That too is a must-win for the Villans, as their fixture list after next weekend is a daunting one.
Villa face Manchester City, Leicester and Liverpool in consecutive games in December. It’s not beyond Gerrard to take something away from those games, but the one against Palace seems the likeliest for the Villans to get all three points.
