‘That’s how I see it’: Souness urges club to block reported transfer to ‘lesser’ Rangers
Graeme Souness has told that Chelsea should keep Billy Gilmour amid interest from Rangers, Norwich and Newcastle in a loan transfer.
The claim Steven Gerrard has asked Rangers to sign Gilmour on loan for the 2021/22 season. Chelsea are considering sending the Scotland international away from Stamford Bridge next term to see he plays regularly.
Gilmour only featured last term, including five Premier League games, as he struggled to establish himself under Thomas Tuchel. But a host of clubs are monitoring the 20-year-old in light of his Euro 2020 efforts.

Norwich are the frontrunners to sign Gilmour after holding talks with Chelsea, per the . The Blues are keen to send the midfielder to Carrow Road, as Tuchel shares a good relationship with their manager Daniel Farke.
Newcastle have also registered their interest in Gilmour, but Chelsea are yet to make a final decision on where he plays next season. Which Souness believes should be under Tuchel.
“Personally, I would keep him at Chelsea, I think Jorginho has to be looking over his shoulder,” Souness . “I know it’s a slightly different position, but I think he’ll be challenging him more than anyone else.
“What made me better, I was 23, went to Liverpool, best team in the world, arguably, certainly the European champions. And I was playing with fabulous players in training every single day. I learnt to think quicker, learnt to improve my touch, move the ball quicker.
“And just being around winners and top players – Chelsea have got bundles of them now – that will improve him more than going out and playing in a lesser team when maybe it’s a battle and a slog every week. That’s how I see it.”
TBR’s view: Rangers face uphill battle for Gilmour loan
Rangers already faced an uphill battle to sign Gilmour on loan with Norwich leading the race for the Chelsea midfielder. Souness’ comments raise another issue, though, as Tuchel may share his view on the Gers in comparison.
The Blues boss may feel Gilmour would be taking a step down over playing regular Premier League football at Carrow Road. Gerrard, then, will have to guide the Gers into the Champions League group stage to have any realistic hopes of securing the midfielder’s Ibrox return after leaving in his teen years.
Winning their third-round qualifier will return Rangers a place in the group stage of the Champions League. But as that fixture is not until early August, Norwich may have stolen a march and have Gilmour signed up already.
