‘That’s all he cares about’: What Duncan Ferguson is really like behind the scenes at Everton

A source inside Everton spoke to this week about Duncan Ferguson and what he’s really like when the cameras are away.

The Toffees sacked Rafa Benitez earlier this week after his side suffered a 2-1 defeat to Norwich City. Everton won just one of their last 12 league games under the Spaniard and a change in management was a necessity after their latest loss.

The Merseysiders are working hard to find a replacement for Benitez, but until they do so, Ferguson will be at the helm.

The Scot, 50, isn’t new to this position and the players already know what he expects from them every day in training and in games.

All Duncan Ferguson cares about is Everton winning

Ahead of the Toffees’ game against Aston Villa, The Athletic spoke to a few people close to Everton about Ferguson.

A former colleague of the 50-year-old Scot told the outlet: “Duncan just wants Everton to win. That’s all he cares about.”

A source inside the club added: “Last time he took charge, his passion transmitted to the players very quickly. I remember seeing the lads buzzing during sessions and they were so happy when they got results because his attitude and will to win had carried them along that bit further. It was infectious.

“They were doing it for his raw enthusiasm, energy and passion. That should be a given, but you don’t always get that from every manager.

“Duncan can seem stern, but under that exterior, he is kind and good-hearted. That shines through. You see how he is with the fans, and people will want to work for him. There’s no doubt about that.”

When Ferguson was asked to be the caretaker boss after Marco Silva was sacked, Everton’s backs were against the wall. They needed to get a result against Chelsea and the Scot got it out of his side.

If anything, Everton need a result even more this time around. The Toffees are currently 16th in the league table and if they are not careful, they could end up in a relegation battle in a few weeks time.

Goodison Park will be rocking when Aston Villa come to town this afternoon. Everton fans already love Ferguson, but if he can get one over the club’s old foe Steven Gerrard, the big Scot will be adored even more.

It will be interesting to see how Everton will fare today. Fans will be expecting a reaction after what happened with Benitez, but it won’t be easy against an Aston Villa side who have looked really good under Gerrard. But, if anyone can get the job done, it’s Big Dunc!
