‘That’s a wind-up surely’… TalkSPORT pundit stunned by Manchester United transfer rumour he’s heard

Manchester United have been linked with RB Leipzig’s Timo Werner in recent days.

And talkSPORT pundit Dean Saunders is not happy with speculation linking the Red Devils with the 27-year-old forward.

According to , Man United have rekindled their interest in Werner, who used to play for Premier League rivals Chelsea.

Man United have reportedly made contact to check on the potential cost of the Germany international, a player they looked at in 2020.

The Red Devils have struggled this season, particularly in attack, and so they could do with bolstering their front line.

Just two Premier League teams have a top-flight tally worse than Man United’s 22 league goals this season – Sheffield United and Burnley.

Werner joined Chelsea to considerable fanfare in 2020, but ended up leaving two years later after just 10 goals from 56 outings.

He revived his career at Leipzig, with 16 goals and six assists from 40 appearances last term.

However, injuries have restricted him to 14 outings, 386 minutes of game time, two goals and one assist in 2023-24.

‘He doesn’t score many’

Saunders, speaking on on Tuesday, doesn’t feel that Werner would be a good shout for Man United in the slightest.

“Man United? That is a wind up, surely,” he said.

“They are going to sign Timo Werner? He had a knack of missing chances, which isn’t a very good thing to have as a striker.

“His movement his excellent. Quick. But he had a knack of missing every time he got in on goal.

“If you sign a forward, goals and assists are what you are there for. He doesn’t make many (goals) and he doesn’t score many.

“And you are going to have to pay him a fortune.”

Speculation linking Man United with Werner has split the Red Devils fanbase.

are at the thought of signing him, while think he’d be a useful addition.

At the end of the day, January is a tricky month to bring in top players, particularly top strikers.

In addition, Man United may be hindered by FFP constraints, so they’d have to work within their means.

In terms of money, the Red Devils have ‘not a lot, if anything at all’, according to The Athletic.

‘Like in January 2023, United need to be cautious and are acutely aware of the possibility of breaching FFP rules,’ they wrote.

‘Their cash reserves – as per their financial accounts for the year ended June 2023 – are also down to £76million, although there is still £40million available to spend on their revolving credit facility.’

With that in mind, Werner is not the worst option for Man United in the January transfer window.

He could be available after losing his place to Lois Openda, and has Premier League experience.
