TBR View: Why Arsenal loanee Smith Rowe is at the perfect club to continue his development
Championship club Huddersfield Town signed Arsenal starlet Emile Smith Rowe on a short-term loan deal on 10th January, as the Yorkshire outfit’s official website.
The 19-year-old’s arrival represents quite the coup for the Terriers. Smith Rowe is an exceptional talent, and has already had an impact at senior level for the Gunners. Since making his first team debut in the Europa League against Ukrainian club Vorskla Poltava in September 2018, the young attacking-midfielder has managed to rack up a dozen senior appearances and has notched three goals, as per .
However, the England under-20 international’s progress last season was curtailed by an injury. His fitness woes meant he only managed three outings for Bundesliga side RB Leipzig following a short-term loan switch.
Mikel Arteta will be keen to see Smith Rowe kick on again in his time at the John Smith’s Stadium. Fortunately, given the managerial set up currently in place at the Championship club, Smith Rowe will be well-guided throughout this crucial period in his development.
TBR’s view
It hasn’t all been plain sailing for Danny Cowley since taking over at Huddersfield in September. However, he and his assistant manager and brother, Nicky Cowley, have certainly presided over an upturn in the Terriers’ fortunes. They will be delighted to have captured Smith Rowe’s services. The Cowleys will also back themselves to get the best out of the teenager.
Attack-minded midfielders such as Harry Anderson, Danny Rowe and Bruno Andrade flourished under the Cowleys during the managerial duo’s tenure in charge of Lincoln City. However, the Cowleys are also pragmatic. They certainly don’t let flair players off the hook when it comes to performing their defensive duties. They will demand that Smith Rowe tracks back, and works hard for the team. The Arsenal loanee will not be mollycoddled and will certainly be expected to show tactical nous and versatility.
This will give Smith Rowe a great grounding in what is expected of a senior player, in a tough league, playing week in, week out. What’s more, the Cowleys have proven themselves to be excellent motivators and man-managers. This is something they demonstrated during their enormously successful time with Lincoln City.
Arteta and Arsenal fans should certainly be comfortable in the knowledge that Smith Rowe’s development is in safe hands. The Premier League giants can also expect a much improved and more refined version of their player to return to the Emirates Stadium come the end of the season.
