TBR View: West Ham must avoid Ollie Watkins situation with reported striker target

West Ham are being linked with Blackburn Rovers forward Adam Armstrong, but need to move quickly to avoid missing out on him.

, the Hammers would like to bring him to the London Stadium this summer.

Championship club Blackburn want £20million for the centre-forward, but may end up letting him go for £16million.

However, the report explains that Southampton are lining up a £15million offer and are leading the race for his signature.

If West Ham miss out on Armstrong to Southampton, they could be facing another Ollie Watkins scenario.

David Moyes’ side were linked () with Watkins last August when he was at Brentford. Ultimately, he ended up joining Aston Villa and enjoying an amazing first year in the Premier League with the Midlands giants. The 25-year-old scored 14 top-flight goals.

Watkins made the step up from the second-tier to the Premier League so comfortably, and perhaps the same will happen with Armstrong.

West Ham desperately need to bring in a new frontman to challenge with Michal Antonio next year.

Armstrong, 24, is a target that looks a no-brainer at £16million.

He scored a staggering 29 goals in 43 games across all competitions this season and can cause havoc with his pace, movement and finishing.

As well as domestic games, West Ham have the attraction of European football next season. They should be in a position to nudge Southampton aside with the offer of Europa League football.

Armstrong looks like an ideal understudy on paper for Antonio.
