TBR View: Tottenham should look at Manchester United defender Chris Smalling
Tottenham would dearly love to bolster their ranks before the end of the transfer window and one man who could do a job is Manchester United defender Chris Smalling.
Last season the defender was in fine form during a loan spell at Roma, but it appears they are turning their focus elsewhere in the quest to land a central defender.
Marash Kumbulla is now their number one target, leaving Smalling in relative limbo at Old Trafford.

Tottenham’s frailties were laid bare in Sunday’s season-opening loss against Everton and Jose Mourinho will be demanding more from his players.
Some of his squad are running out of opportunities to try and dig themselves out of a hole though.
Eric Dier, for example, is often inconsistent and if Tottenham hold ambitions of winning trophies they need better at the heart of the defence.
In Smalling, they’d be signing a player with confidence that is sky-high after a stunning season playing regularly with Roma in Serie A.
He made 37 appearances in all competitions during 2019/20 and Mourinho knows all about his qualities having worked together at United.
It was claimed in March that United want for the player who earns £70,000-a-week .
Smalling’s desire to play football though might tempt the Red Devils into doing something. Lowering the asking price seems unlikely, but a loan with a view to purchasing could be viable.
Upgrade
At 30 Smalling has plenty left to offer and he’d be an ideal player to slot in alongside Toby Alderweireld.

With 219 Premier League games under his belt, he’d bring experience as well as quality to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Smalling is strong in the tackle, shows good positional sense and reads the game exceptionally well.
The defender might not be the most attractive signing on paper but landing the 31 cap performer would improve Mourinho’s chances of a successful season during 2020/21.
