TBR View: Tottenham should elbow Mourinho aside, form Nuno reunion for £21.5m

Jose Mourinho has used the Premier League as a scouting pool in his first summer as Roma manager. But after missing out on Granit Xhaka, Mourinho has now identified Wolves ace Leander Dendoncker as an option. But Dendoncker is surely ideal for Tottenham, and Nuno Espirito Santo.

26-year-old Dendoncker is a target for Mourinho. Roma have been after Xhaka for much of the summer but ultimately, have not been able to agree a fee with Arsenal. He has turned to 20-time Belgium international Dendoncker, who Wolves rate at £21.5million.

Tottenham, meanwhile, need additions in the middle of the park and in defence. While Cristian Romero is expected to come in and replace Toby Alderweireld, improvements are still required – with Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez struggled last season. In midfield, depth is required.

Tottenham need Dendoncker more than Mourinho needs Wolves star

Of course, Dendoncker joined Wolves – initially on loan from Anderlecht – in the summer of 2018 under Nuno Espirito Santo. Since then, he has clocked up 120 appearances for Wolves in three season – all of which have come under Nuno. His consistency and versatility have been integral to Wolves.

An ability to remain injury free, Dendoncker has clocked up an average of 40 outings a season – in defence or midfield. They are the two main areas in which Tottenham require strengthening. So, surely it makes utter sense for Tottenham to bring in Dendoncker from Wolves this summer?

Not only is it simply that Tottenham should sign him – but the fact that he and Nuno already have a brilliant relationship makes him ideal. At £21.5million, he is a bargain – and the fact that Mourinho misses out is the cherry on top. A move that Tottenham have got to consider this summer.
