TBR View: Tottenham have made a terrible mistake amid Son Heung-min injury woes
Tottenham Hotspur’s attacking woes just got a lot worse on Tuesday as the club announced that Spurs ace Son Heung-min would be undergoing surgery and potentially be out for a number of weeks.
The South Korea international will be going under the knife after sustaining a fracture to his right arm during Spurs’ victory over Aston Villa, the Premier League club has .
Son scored twice against the relegation battlers but is now set for the sidelines, with the Tottenham website estimating “a number of weeks” out.
However, Spurs head coach Jose Mourinho questioned the timescale issued by the club and severely doubts that the 27-year-old will be back this season, as reported by .
“I’m not going to count on him again this season,” said Mourinho. “If he plays two or three games then it’s because (Tottenham’s press officer) is very optimistic, and I hope he is right. But, in my mind, I’m not thinking about that.
“We are going to miss him. The club wrote a nice statement. If I was the one to write the statement, I would write different.”
With Tottenham also missing Harry Kane through injury, the team is now severely hampered in attack – Lucas Moura, Steven Bergwijn and Troy Parrott are now the only fit forwards.
All of this makes the failure to hang on to Fernando Llorente, who was allowed to leave the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on a free transfer, all the more baffling.
Last season, the Spaniard proved a superb deputy in Kane’s absence, with eight goals and five assists in all competitions, despite just 11 starts ().
Llorente also etched his name in Tottenham’s run to the Champions League final with the goal against Manchester City and the knockdown for Moura’s thrilling hat-trick goal.
But more than that, the 34-year-old was simply a great back-up option, his height and aerial ability offering a plan B and with no qualms about the role he was playing.
However, he is now no longer at Spurs, having switched to Napoli, and even reports suggesting a January return (The Mirror, 16 January, page 54) proved wide of the mark.
Now, with Kane and Son out long-term, it’s looking like a pretty terrible decision by Daniel Levy and co to let Llorente leave.
