TBR View: Tottenham decision hands Everton the ideal opportunity, after Maitland-Niles failure
Everton’s need for a right-back has lasted beyond deadline day after failing to sign Ainsley Maitland-Niles – but Tottenham could help with that.
Maitland-Niles was linked with a move to Everton, with the Toffees supposedly making a loan-to-buy offer for the Gunners star ().
Everton wanted the England international due to their lack of options on the right side of the defence. Seamus Coleman is 33 in October.
So, Everton wanted Maitland-Niles but a move did not materialise – even after his post on Instagram. Darren Bent backed a move.
Jonjoe Kenny is another option but he went on loan to Celtic last season and struggled. He was surplus to requirements under Carlo Ancelotti.
Mason Holgate and Ben Godfrey are more naturally options in the middle of the defence. So, Everton need a right-back but the window is shut.

Maitland-Niles stays: Tottenham could help Everton get right-back
Meanwhile, Tottenham brought in Emerson Royal from Barcelona for a fee of £26million. That move was celebrated by Spurs fans on deadline day.
But the move has also seen Serge Aurier choose to terminate his contract. Still only 28, Aurier is still an excellent option for a club like Everton.
Tottenham confirmed his release on the evening of deadline day, with his Spurs contract expiring in June 2022. Everton could now solve their issues.
Aurier has plenty of experience in the Premier League, he has 66 caps for his country – and is captain of the Ivory Coast. He is easily worth £10million.
So, on a free – Everton have got to consider a move for Aurier after failing to sign Maitland-Niles. Spurs might have just handed a right-back solution.
