TBR View: Steven Gerrard has no chance, now Liverpool are reportedly after left-back

Liverpool have reportedly joined the race to sign Olympiacos left-back Konstantinos Tsimikas this summer, which could see them rival a whole host of Premier League heavyweights – but it may prove to be one step, too far for Steven Gerrard.

Tsimikas, 23, has jumped onto the shortlist of a number of European heavyweights this summer for his performances in both the Champions League and Europa League. He impressed against Spurs, and then during two legs against Arsenal.

that Liverpool are keen on the Greece international but face Premier League competition from the likes of Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Leicester City. Inter Milan and Napoli are also keen on Tsimikas.

The level of interest in Tsimikas is hardly surprising. Still in the early stages of his career, the Greek ace has improved on the bigger occasions. This season, he has created seven goals from left-back during his 37 outings.

But Premier League clubs were not the first to notice Tsimikas. Indeed, Rangers and Steven Gerrard were first linked with the left-back in December by – with The Gers likely to be after a left-sided defender to replace Borna Barisic.

Barisic has been linked with a move down south and indeed to other European sides, and Rangers may have considered Tsimikas a possible replacement for the Croatian defender. However, with Liverpool keen, that looks unlikely.

There are not many more tantalising prospects around in European football at the moment, than Liverpool. Even against their Premier League rivals, Anfield is a much more exciting option for players this summer than the likes of Spurs or Arsenal.

So, if Gerrard had any chance of signing the £22million-rated defender this summer, that has now gone with Liverpool now interested in signing the left-back.
