TBR View: Sheffield Wednesday should consider move for Scott Hogan

Scott Hogan is set to return to Aston Villa this January, leaving the door wide open for another potential loan move, with Sheffield Wednesday one of a number of clubs who should be interested.

The Irish striker has once again struggled for form this season. He moved to Stoke City in the summer on a season-long loan deal from Villa.

However, new Potters manager, Michael O’Neill, is willing to allow Hogan to return to Villa Park early.

Hogan has struggled for any sort of consistent form ever since completing a big-money move to Villa from Brentford a few seasons back.

But last season saw him part of a promotion-winning squad. His January move to Sheffield United culminating in success. Indeed, Hogan even got the crucial goal against Ipswich to all but guarantee promotion for the Blades.

He’s a player, then, who despite cross-city ties, could well do a job for Sheffield Wednesday.

New players needed

The Owls need to make a few moves in January if they can. However, they won’t be spending big sums of money, meaning loan moves will be the order of the day.

Hogan, then, fits in perfectly to their current model. And while the goals have dried up somewhat for Hogan, a fresh start could be just what he needs.

He has bagged only twice this season but has proven he knows where the net is previously. Indeed, he managed 14 for Brentford in half a season before securing his move to the Villans.

Furthermore, Wednesday could have lost Steven Fletcher to injury. The big Scot was stretchered off yesterday and could miss a period of football.

Monk magic

Regardless of some of the negative fans, Garry Monk has done very well at Hillsborough. He’s working in difficult conditions due to the ownership issues and getting a lot from his players.

Therefore, Monk might well the one to get the best out of Scott Hogan.

Sheffield Wednesday need more goals to ensure they don’t drift away from a play-off chase and Scott Hogan could well give them a timely boost.
