TBR View: Postecoglou’s decision to hand Griffiths a one-year contract has Celtic moving backwards
Offering Leigh Griffiths a new Celtic contract is a horrible move from Ange Postecoglou and the club.
The 30-year-old signed a new one-year deal to keep him with the club until next summer. His old contract expired at midnight last night, however, he’ll now stay on for next season at least.
It was confirmed a few days ago that Griffiths ‘expected‘ a new deal after holding talks with the new manager.
Griffiths was far from his best last season in what was a dismal campaign for the former Hibernian ace. He featured 26 times across all competitions, scoring just seven goals for the outfit.
Ace’s injury woes a massive worry for the club
Griffiths suffered numerous injury problems over the course of the 2020/2021 campaign, including a calf strain. He was also forced to quarantine after being caught breaching Covid regulations.
The ace’s as a whole is fairly poor over the last few years with the centre-forward missing a raft of games. He missed 25 fixtures during the 2019/2020 season due to a calf and hamstring issue.
However, somehow he’s earned a new contract at Celtic Park in what is a baffling move.

Offering the veteran a new deal will only hamper the outfit moving into next season.
It was abundantly clear from last season that the striker needed to be moved on. Just seven goals was an alarming tally from the former Wolves man.
As a matter of fact, the ace even went as far as admitting his poor form. In an interview with , Griffiths claimed he didn’t deserve a call-up to Scotland’s Euro 2020 squad.
The expiration of his contract was the perfect opportunity to let him go and sign a new, younger centre-forward.
And Celtic were further boosted as Leicester City veered away from signing Odsonne Edouard. The Foxes instead chose to move for Parson Daka.
Retaining Edouard whilst signing a younger striker would’ve been an ideal tactic from Postecoglou. However, the Greek-born figure has made his first bad decision after already entering the job as an unpopular figure.
