TBR View: Pochettino wanted defender that Mourinho is linked with luring to Tottenham
Jose Mourinho is reportedly keen on luring Freiburg defender Robin Koch to Tottenham this summer as the Germany international continues to shine in the Bundesliga – and Mauricio Pochettino’s link with Koch is all the more reason to sign him.
Gennaro Gattuso’s Napoli are desperate to win the race and lure 23-year-old Koch to Serie A. However, Spurs and Borussia Dortmund are mentioned as being keen, while Benfica have also been strongly linked.
It is hardly surprising. Koch has been in stunning form once again and the main spearhead behind Freiburg’s excellent 2019-20 form that has propelled the German side into eighth place in the Bundesliga – far above pre-season expectations.
The report claims interested parties will have to pay around £18million to sign Koch, a fee more than affordable for Tottenham who are likely to be in the market for Jan Vertonghen’s replacement. But Pochettino’s previous link makes it a no-brainer.

Indeed, last summer that Pochettino wanted to lure Koch to north London having been impressed by the defender – with Freiburg renowned for producing decent centre-backs, Caglar Soyuncu for example.
With Vertonghen on his way out, Juan Foyth seemingly surplus to requirements and Japhet Tanganga being used as cover for Serge Aurier just as much as he is being used at centre-back – Koch seems like a must-buy.
But for Pochettino and now Mourinho to be interested in signing the German ace, it shows that Koch would be perfect – especially at such a low figure for a player of his age. Pochettino’s link makes the importance of signing Koch even higher.
