TBR View: Newcastle should hand Issac Hayden a chance over Jeff Hendrick

Newcastle United are down in 14th position at the November international break and it could be time for Isaac Hayden to replace Jeff Hendrick in Steve Bruce’s team.

The Magpies have won three of their eight fixtures so far and were disappointing in defeat at Southampton in the final game before the break.

Bruce is probably left with more questions than answers after the opening two months of the campaign, with some selection decisions coming under scrutiny.

It’s fair to say that one area that is offering the boss cause for concern is in central midfield.

Hendrick arrived on a free transfer during the summer having left Burnley at the end of last season.

He’s failed to show the Magpies what he is all about just yet, however, and the heat is on for him to start performing in the team.

Hendrick has started each of Newcastle’s eight games, registering one goal and one assist so far during 2020/21.

Former Arsenal trainee Hayden hasn’t really done much wrong to find himself out of the reckoning.

He has started five times in the league but has been passed from pillar to post a little bit.

The 25-year-old has played at centre-back, in the heart of midfield and also as a holding player in front of the back four.

Hayden’s demise is a shock considering he played 35 games last season and didn’t let Bruce down.

Hendrick has 57 caps for his country but he has to up his game if he is to keep his place in the Newcastle team for the foreseeable.

Last season Hayden performed well and it could be time for Bruce to unleash him on the first team when domestic football resumes.
