TBR View: Newcastle have got to be in the mix for Thomas Meunier, Tottenham leading race

Newcastle United’s prospective takeover is reportedly nearing a conclusion and with the new owners working in the background to identify a number of new additions – surely a Paris Saint-Germain freebie should be at the top of their list.

A striker is certainly the first port of call with club-record signing Joelinton struggling. Yoshinori Muto and Dwight Gayle are also expected to depart, while Andy Carroll’s contract expires at the end of the season.

However, a striker is not the only area that requires strengthening. A right-sided defender is just as important, despite the club currently boasting DeAndre Yedlin, Javi Manquillo and Emil Krafth.

However, Manquillo’s contract – like Carroll’s – is expected to expire at the end of June while reports from his home country of American suggest that Yedlin could depart, after losing his place in USA’s starting line-up.

That leaves just Sweden international Krafth, who has struggled for game time in his first season at Newcastle. So, a right-back is certainly required and a big-name freebie should be high on their shortlist in the form of PSG’s Thomas Meunier.

Certainly one of Europe’s best right-backs, 28-year-old Meunier is out of contract at the end of the season with PSG seemingly looking to go in a different direction. The 40-time Belgium international is set to leave.

Not only is Meunier defensively solid, but he is just as effective going forward – something which Newcastle lack on their right flank. In 128 appearances for PSG, Meunier has scored 13 goals and created 21 more.

According to Tottenham are in pole position to sign Meunier. But surely Newcastle need to be in the mix for a big-name right-back and with Meunier available on a free, he is the perfect solution for the club’s prospective new owners.
