TBR View: Memphis Depay shows why Tottenham must pounce in January

It’s almost a year since Tottenham were linked with a £36 million move for ex-Manchester United player Memphis Depay and right now the player is showing why Spurs must pounce.

linked the North London-based side with a move for the player who flattered to deceive during his last Premier League spell.

Now, Depay has just seven months left on his contract at Lyon and could be available for a considerably cheaper price.

As his valuation plummets, his form continues on an upward trajectory with the 26-year-old one of Holland’s most important players.

During the last week, the versatile forward has scored two goals in three games for his country, taking his tally to 21 goals in 59 appearances.

He is currently the Lyon captain but it doesn’t seem likely that he will remain in France beyond the 2020/21 campaign.

With that in mind, Tottenham should prepare to move for a player who could bolster their ranks considerably.

Jose Mourinho has enjoyed a solid start to the current season but he’ll strive to improve the squad further.

Depay’s versatility to play through the middle or on the flanks would make him an attractive signing for Tottenham.

Steven Bergwijn is the player who currently acts as the versatile spark in the Spurs attacking ranks – although his form has been erratic.

He has scored 59 goals and registered 46 assists in 148 appearances, becoming a fan favourite at the Groupama Stadium.

Depay earns just at Lyon and if his valuation, as expected, is lowered, Tottenham should prepare to swoop.

Mourinho has a plethora of attacking talent but Depay could make his squad a formidable force and help the club to the Premier League title.
