TBR View: Matt Doherty is helping to get the best out of Tottenham’s Serge Aurier

Despite being linked with an exit during the recent transfer window, Tottenham defender Serge Aurier appears to have rediscovered some confidence and looks a great option for manager Jose Mourinho moving forward this season.

There has been plenty of recent speculation about the 27-year-old possibly leaving but he’s remained in North London, albeit the EFL window remains open for a few more days still.

The reported in August (30/8; page 53) that Spurs were willing to offload him in a transfer deal, as well as claiming that he was keen on joining Italian club AC Milan.

Aurier’s position at Spurs looked under threat when the club signed Matt Doherty from Wolverhampton Wanderers this summer on top of speculation about his future, but it’s turned out to be a blessing in disguise.

Doherty’s to compete for the right-back position appears to be getting the very best out of Aurier and the healthy competition in the squad is working a treat.

Doherty has been a key part of Wolves’ success in recent seasons and mastered the right wing-back position at Molineux, which is why Spurs went out to sign him and strengthen their options in the full-back position.

The 28-year-old is still taking some time adjusting to a more traditional back four, but there is no doubt he’s got big quality and potential to be key for them.

Meanwhile, Aurier was given the nod to start in the last game before the international break and he was superb in the 6-1 demolition of Manchester United in the Premier League and that will give him massive confidence moving forward.

Mourinho is going to need the full depth of his squad to compete on both domestic and European fronts this season, which is why Aurier appears to be reigniting his Spurs career and he’ll know he needs to up his game to get the edge of new signing Doherty.
