TBR View: Mark McGuinness shows star quality that could earn Arsenal chance

Arsenal defender Mark McGuinness is currently out on loan with Ipswich Town and on Tuesday night showcased that he might just have what it takes to make the grade.

The man-mountain defender has been forced to wait patiently to make an impact with the Tractor Boys, with Paul Lambert slowly blending him into his team.

McGuinness, 19, caught the eye of the Ipswich boss during an EFL Trophy contest where the defender captained an Arsenal under-23 team to victory over the League One outfit.

On Tuesday, the Gunners academy graduate helped his new club claim a 1-0 win over Gillingham at Portman Road – claiming Man of the Match in the process.

During the game, McGuinness highlighted exactly what he could bring to the table if he is handed a chance at Arsenal.

He completed no fewer than 10 clearances, finished with an 84% pass success ratio and also snuffed out four Gillingham attacks with interceptions .

Interestingly, Arsenal might find themselves in the market for a central defender again next summer.

David Luiz and Shkodran Mustafi will see their contracts expire, leaving Gabriel, William Saliba and Pablo Mari as the main three centre-backs.

At 19, McGuinness perhaps has plenty of time to earn a shot. In Mikel Arteta, however, the Gunners do have a manager who cares about investing in academy talents.

The defender scored a superb header against MK Dons during a pre-season outing for the Gunners and the boss is aware of what he can do.

A few more performances like the one for Ipswich on Tuesday night and he might earn another chance to impress Arteta in the future.
