TBR View: Liverpool should avoid sentiment and offload Divock Origi

Liverpool finished their Champions League campaign with a 1-1 draw against Midtjylland and during the game a problem for Jurgen Klopp became evident.

Reds striker Divock Origi has been a decent signing for Liverpool after initially failing to make an impact.

He was signed from Lille in 2014 and instantly loaned back to the Ligue 1 outfit.

Then, when he returned to Anfield he was sent on loan to Wolfsburg to continue honing his skills.

Following his return to the club at the start of the 2018/19 campaign, he started to be utilised more by Klopp.

The 25-year-old scored eight goals that season with important strikes coming in the Champions League semi-final and final.

He did only manage eight starts though and it was a familiar situation last season.

Although he managed a few more starts, he was largely viewed as a peripheral figure, scoring six times in all competitions.

During 2020/21 he has fallen way off the radar.

He is yet to start a game in the Premier League, making just a single substitute appearance in the last minute against Leicester.

With that in mind, it looks as though the time has come for Klopp to make a tough, but ultimately, correct decision.

Origi only cost and it’s fair to say Liverpool have enjoyed their money’s worth.

His goals in the Champions League win of 2018/19 won’t be forgotten but the Reds are now holding Origi back.

He showed in Denmark on Wednesday night that his form is all over the place and that is down to a lack of game time.

Liverpool need to avoid sentiment and try and offload the striker during the January transfer window.
