TBR View: Liverpool have got to sign Memphis Depay after Gini Wijnaldum comments
Liverpool were thrashed 7-2 by Aston Villa prior to the international break, providing the champions with a serious setback in their title defence.
The Reds will be keen to get themselves back on track when they face bitter rivals, Everton when club football resumes.
Jurgen Klopp signed Kostas Tsimikas, Thiago Alcantara and Diogo Jota during the transfer window and it’ll be interesting to see if they head back into the market in January.
Xherdan Shaqiri looks like being down the pecking order, whilst Harry Wilson looks slightly off the pace when it comes to playing for Liverpool.
There’s also the case that Roberto Firmino’s form is perhaps providing cause for concern. Although the Brazilian does other things well, as the focal point of the attack, he could do with a goal or two.
With that in mind, Klopp might look to add some firepower to his ranks and one man who might be a useful addition happens to be a good friend of Gini Wijnaldum.
The Dutchman took to Instagram this week to share a photo of himself marking Memphis Depay in training ahead of Holland’s game with Mexico.
He mentioned that he’d be glad to have the Lyon man on his team when it matters and as a result, he’d perhaps be a decent player for Klopp to take to Liverpool.
Depay has already played in the Premier League and did fail to have an impact during a frustrating time of things at Manchester United.
Since leaving Old Trafford he has come of age though and has made a serious impression on Ligue 1.
The 26-year-old has scored 58 goals and registered 43 assists during his 144 games for the French outfit, including four goals this season.
Depay’s contract expires next summer and Liverpool could technically pounce on a free transfer at that point.
Competition
They could choose to sign him in January though with Lyon surely like to take what they can get in order to avoid losing their captain for nothing.
Depay is a player who could seriously excite the Liverpool supporters and his signing makes sense.
He can play in pretty much any forward position, is quick and ultimately knows where the back of the net is.
Wijnaldum clearly thinks Depay is a handful to play against and plenty of Premier League defenders would probably agree.
The player has applied himself elsewhere and he’d surely welcome the chance to settle the record straight in the Premier League.
