TBR View: Leeds making third Che Adams bid is concerning
Leeds United made another attempt to sign Che Adams this week, that the Whites had seen a third bid for the striker rejected.
The report suggested that the offer would have involved Adams moving on loan before completing a £20 million move in the summer if Leeds secured promotion.
However, rather than prove to be enough to convince Southampton to sell their summer signing, the offer appears to have caught the Saints off-guard.
in the hours after the bid reports that Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men had been left bemused by Leeds continuing to pursue the former Birmingham City man.
Southampton have reportedly made it clear previously that Adams will be going nowhere. So it appears that they were not expecting Leeds to return with another offer.
Of course, given the stakes involved, you could understand why Leeds may be tempted to try all they can to get Adams through the door.
But perhaps there is also an argument that Leeds making a third bid is a concerning sign regarding the club’s plans.
The promotion-chasers would have been aware for some time ahead of the January window that Eddie Nketiah may be recalled by Arsenal, leaving them needing to sign another striker.
They arguably had enough time to put together a substantial list. Of course, Marcelo Bielsa may not be the easiest head coach to buy for. But the club should have still been able to produce a list of names.
The Whites may now prove that they indeed have a number of targets in mind.
But you could understand why some supporters may have their doubts about that being the case. They have made an offer that could involve a £20 million move in the summer for a player who has not scored in the league this season.
That is not to say that Adams would not prove to be a worthwhile signing for that fee. But Leeds are continuing to make bids after seemingly having it made it clear that the player is going nowhere.
Leeds may have something special up their sleeve in the final days of the window. And the suggestion that they have no backup plan may prove to be very wide of the mark.
But with the deadline looming, and another bid placed for Adams, it is difficult not to worry Leeds may have placed all of their eggs in one basket.
