TBR View: If latest Marcus Edwards rumour is true, it looks like bad news for Tottenham

When Marcus Edwards left Tottenham Hotspur, it was on a free transfer that may have come back to haunt the club amidst an update on his future.

Back in the summer of 2019, the youngster departed north London for Liga NOS outfit Guimaraes. It was agreed between the two clubs that they would split a future sell-on fee 50/50.

Edwards has since enjoyed a great spell with the Portuguese outfit and attracted interest as a result.

Top-flight champions Sporting Lisbon are keen on the 22-year-old, according to . Guimaraes want €12m (£10.2m) for the ace; a price the league winners consider ‘exaggerated’.

The Lions want to pay just €6m (£5.1m) with the inclusion of players in the deal.

All in all, it would leave the Lilywhites making just €3m (£2.6m) from a 22-year-old expected to have a very bright future.

Edwards represents poor business

Back in 2019, the release of a youngster who was once highly-regarded by Mauricio Pochettino raised a few eyebrows.

The Argentine claimed the star had the same qualities as legendary figure . To let Edwards leave for free seems like a poor decision from Tottenham.

His quality has been unquestionable in the Portuguese top division since his move a couple of years ago.

completed 2.2 dribbles per league game last season, the joint-most when compared to players. He has also won 1.9 fouls per league game, the most compared to the current Spurs squad.

While the summer has just got underway in terms of possible moves, it seems the club are falling short with regards to outgoings. The Edwards deal represents horrible value for the Lilywhites.
