TBR View: Does new contract suggest Spurs are planning for life without Danny Rose?
Tottenham Hotspur have agreed a new contract with highly-rated left-back Harvey White as he continues to shine for the club’s reserve side in multiple positions – but does the move to secure White’s future suggest more than just keeping the youngster?
White, still only 18, has starred under Ryan Mason in the UEFA Youth League and for the club’s Under-23 side. He is able to play on the left side of the defence, in central midfield or on the left of midfield.
But given Tottenham’s wealth of options in midfield at the moment, in Eric Dier, Harry Winks, Gio Lo Celso, Tanguy Ndombele, Moussa Sissoko, Victor Wanyama, Oliver Skipp and others in the Under-23 side, White may be used as a left-back.

White is much more likely to break through on the left side of defence given Ryan Sessegnon is preferred as a winger and Jan Vertonghen is due to leave this summer. Ben Davies is the only current left-sided defender at Spurs.
A new deal for White may seem him become back-up to Wales international Davies – but keeping White may just be a sign that Spurs are planning for life without Danny Rose, who is on loan at Newcastle until the end of the season.
Certainly, White has shown enough talent that suggests he can break into the first team sooner rather than later. With Rose’s contract at Spurs expiring in the summer of 2021 and already out on loan, a summer exit could be on the cards.
Surely, then, a new deal for White is not only a move to keep with one of the most talented youngsters at the club on the books – but also preparing for life without 29-time England international Rose.
