TBR View: Celtic need to throw hat into ring and sign Euro 2020 goalscorer released by Leeds United

Leeds United confirmed last week that Gjanni Alioski would be leaving the club after four years with the Whites. A fan favourite at Elland Road, his crazy antics saw fans fall in love with him – and he was pretty good on the pitch too. Now a free agent, Celtic have got to consider the left-back.

Alioski, 29, is recovering after representing North Macedonia at Euro 2020 – in which he even scored against Ukraine during the group stages. Helping Leeds gain promotion to the Premier League, Alioski then remained first choice on the left side of the defence. He can also play as a winger.

But the left-back has now decided to leave Leeds. The Whites have since brought in Junior Firpo from Barcelona and such a move is likely to have convinced Alioski to go, rather than stay and be back-up. He remains on the look out for a new team, with interest in his services from Turkish clubs.

Why Celtic need to consider signing Alioski after Leeds exit

Celtic are in need of a major overhaul this summer. While numerous on-loan players have returned to their parent clubs, others could also leave. and more are expected to be sold. Celtic need additions all over the park.

Certainly, they need a new left-back. Greg Taylor has been mediocre since joining and Diego Laxalt has returned to AC Milan. So, why not one with Premier League experience, 46 caps for his country and one that is available for nothing? He would also provide cover on the left wing.

Celtic need a player like Alioski because he offers cover in two positions – but also save new gaffer Ange Postecoglou money to spend elsewhere. It remains to be seen if Alioski would be keen on a move but European football is likely to be tempting. Celtic need Alioski.
