TBR view: Aston Villa should rival Newcastle for signing of Paco Alcacer

Newcastle have been linked with a £25m move for Borussia Dortmund striker Paco Alcacer. has reported that discussions are taking place with the German club about a loan-to-buy move. Aston Villa need to rival the Magpies for the Spanish striker’s signature.

Both clubs are suffering from a striker crisis. Newcastle’s summer signing Joelinton has just one Premier League goal, and Villa are without striker Wesley for the rest of the season. Dean Smith has already brought in Mbwana Samatta this month but is keen to add another striker to his roster to aid his side in their fight for survival.

Alcacer would be the perfect option, and at just £25 million, it presents relatively good value. The 26-year-old has made just 11 league appearances for Dortmund this season and the arrival of Erling Braut Haaland will only diminish his minutes further.

The Spanish striker is keen on a move away to ensure a place in the Spain squad for the European Championships in the summer. Villa could certainly offer him that and he would be the main man upfront for the Midlands club. His European pedigree would likely edge him in front of Samatta in the pecking order.

Alcacer has scored an impressive five goals in 11 Bundesliga games. He is a deadly striker who will score goals wherever he goes. He would feed off the creativity of Jack Grealish and could be crucial to the Villains staying up this season.

The former Barcelona striker may not want to join a team that is in real danger of relegation but could be tempted by the guarantee of first-team football. It is worth at least an inquiry from Dean Smith.
