TBR View: Aston Villa got lucky by missing out on £20m Milot Rashica

Aston Villa enjoyed a fine transfer window this summer, bringing in a number of quality players to help Dean Smith’s push this season.

The likes of Emi Martinez, Ross Barkley, and Ollie Watkins all arrived to bolster Villa’s ranks, with Martinez and Watkins both making immediate impacts and Barkley being credited with helping Jack Grealish get even better.

Those three were signed among a host of other names who were linked to the club.

One such player was Kosovo international Milot Rashica, who was said to within touching distance of completing a move to Villa Park in a deal said

The numbers backed up why Rashica might have been a good signing. Eleven goals and eight assists across all competitions painted a picture of a player who could have a big impact at the Midlands club.

However, Villa may well have got away with one, judging on Rashica’s start to the season.

Out of sorts

The winger was given a week off to apparently clear his head following deadline day coming to a close. Reports in Germany stated this was due to a move to Bayer Leverkusen breaking down.

Since then, Rashica has continued to struggle with a knee injury and has, as yet, failed to start a game for Werder Bremen, playing just 25 minutes of the season so far.

His injury seems to be niggling him and causing concern, while his attitude has also been called into question following his failed transfers.

So, then, it seems Villa might have got away with one here. Bertrand Traore arrived instead and has looked lively when given the chance, while Rashica continues to struggle.

Maybe, just maybe, Villa’s luck in the market has changed this summer following a number of flop signings in recent seasons.
