Should Aston Villa’s Tammy Abraham have joined Cardiff instead?
Aston Villa youngster Tammy Abraham may come to regret his decision to move to the Midlands club.
The striker joined from Chelsea on loan this summer and is set to make his debut against Blackburn Rovers on Saturday.
Last term he made 31 Premier League appearances for Swansea City, scoring five goals at the top level.
Many felt as though he would remain in the English top flight, but he has dropped down a division.
Abraham has Championship experience already of course, having turned out for Bristol City in 2016/17.
He did very well there, scoring 23 goals in 41 league appearances.
Now he’s back with the Villans and will be hoping to post similar statistics, but is he missing out on vital Premier League experience?
‘Tammy would have been my main man’
Cardiff City boss Neil Warnock has been speaking about the possibility of signing Abraham.
And it very much sounds like he would have seen a lot of game time in the Premier League.
He said, : “I wanted Tammy Abraham from day one and I spoke to Eddie Newton (Chelsea’s loan player technical coach) about it, but he ended up at Aston Villa.
“I was really disappointed they didn’t even come back to me. I thought I at least deserved a phone call saying ‘sorry Neil, he’s not joining’.
“Tammy would have been my main man in the Premier League – surely that would have been better for him? I don’t understand it. Surely they would want him playing in the Premier League?
“I don’t think it was a question over the size of the loan fee – we would have paid it. I just the felt the way we played, he would have enjoyed it and had an impact.”
A missed opportunity?
Warnock’s comments suggest Abraham has missed out on a great opportunity.
Regular Premier League football can be notoriously hard to come by for young players.
It would have been a chance for him to build on his stint at Swansea.
Instead, he is back in the Championship with Villa, and although he may have a fantastic season there and raise his confidence, there will be a lingering feeling about what might have been.
Maybe it’s mainly Chelsea’s doing, but Warnock is right to question the move.
