TalkSPORT pundit shocked after hearing who Manchester United could appoint to replace Erik ten Hag

TalkSPORT duo Andy Goldstein and Darren Bent had their say after hearing that Graham Potter is a candidate to replace Erik ten Hag as Manchester United’s manager.

The Red Devils have found themselves in a really difficult position. They have a ton of injuries, are out of Europe, and everyone expects them to get hammered against Liverpool this week. That could cost Ten Hag his job, and Manchester United apparently have someone in mind to replace him already.

Erik ten Hag is under enormous pressure at Manchester United, and rightly so.

The Red Devils have lost more games than they’ve won in all competitions this season. They crashed out of Europe after finishing bottom of their group this week and are also getting battered by clubs like Bournemouth at home.

Ten Hag still has a lot of support from sections of the fan base, but there are many who are already calling for his job. That number will increase if they get humiliated by Liverpool on Sunday.

One name that has come up this week is Graham Potter. Sir Jim Ratcliffe has apparently already spoken to the 48-year-old about the Manchester United job.

Andy Goldstein cannot believe it. He said on : “I have to say, I’m absolutely stunned, a) Man United would even contemplate looking for another manager, and b) that Graham Potter’s name is even in the mix. I just don’t get it.

“When he was Brighton manager, I was doing the Sports Bar with Cundy, and he was linked to Chelsea. I was like: ‘There’s no way he should get the job, in my opinion, I don’t think he has enough experience to take on one of the big heads in Chelsea.’

“I was right, I was proved right, he failed at Chelsea.”

Darren Bent, however, backed Potter to succeed at Manchester United. He said: “I think he’d be a better fit (than Ten Hag) and I think he’s a good coach.

“No, I don’t think it is (a stopgap). I think he will be the right person to take Manchester United forward. I don’t think you’re anywhere near winning the league anyway but you’ll be in a better place.”

Manchester United should stick with Erik ten Hag

Manchester United are in a terrible position right now, and Erik ten Hag deserves a lot of the blame. The Dutchman has failed to implement a proper system, and some of his decisions over the last few months have been hard to understand.

However, sacking Ten Hag now is not a wise decision – not because he deserves to keep his job but because there is no other elite manager available right now.

Graham Potter is a good coach, but the pressure that comes with the Manchester United job is huge, and we’re not sure he’s ready for that just yet.

The best option now, in our opinion, is to keep hold of Ten Hag until the end of this season. If things don’t improve, United can go after a world-class manager then.
