TalkSPORT pundit says he really wishes Tottenham had signed Calvin Bassey

Darren Ambrose has claimed on that he really wished Tottenham Hotspur had signed Calvin Bassey from Rangers this summer.
One of Spurs’ priorities in this summer’s transfer window was a left-footed defender. Antonio Conte ended last season with two solid centre-backs in Cristian Romero and Eric Dier.
Ben Davies was absolutely phenomenal in the second half of the campaign too, but the Welshman’s position was one Tottenham were really keen on upgrading.
After tons of links to players like Alessandro Bastoni and Josko Gvardiol, Spurs had to settle for Clement Lenglet on loan from Barcelona, but Ambrose believes they should’ve signed Bassey from Rangers instead.

Bassey had a phenomenal campaign for Rangers last season, especially in the Europa League.
His fantastic performances earned him a move to Dutch champions Ajax, who have agreed to pay £23 million to Rangers for his services this summer.
Speaking about Bassey, Ambrose said on , as quoted by : “I watched him in the Europa League, especially the final against Frankfurt, I thought he was outstanding. I think this is a tremendous signing for Ajax.
“The games I did watch, he stood out and I was, as a Spurs fan thinking, ‘we should go for Calvin Bassey’. They (Ajax) have just sold (Lisandro) Martinez to Manchester United, so it has freed up space.
“At £23 million, that is a snip. It’s a pearl (of a signing) for me.”

TBR View:
Bassey really was fantastic for Rangers last season, and it’s understandable why Ambrose felt he’d be a good fit at Tottenham.
The Leicester City academy product, still only 22, played 50 times for the Gers in all competitions. He slotted in at both left-back and centre-back – two positions Spurs were looking to strengthen in this window.
Bassey’s pace and aggressive style of defending would’ve been brilliant in Conte’s system, but it’s Ajax who have snapped him up now, for what looks like a bargain fee.
If Ajax’s history is anything to go by, they will end up selling Bassey for a mammoth fee in a few years, and maybe, Tottenham will make a move for him then.
