Swansea manager keen on extending stay of Freddie Woodman

Swansea manager Steve Cooper is keen on retaining the services of Newcastle goalkeeper Freddie Woodman beyond his season-long loan deal. The young English stopper has played in every minute of Swansea’s Championship campaign so far and has impressed throughout.

The 22-year-old has nine clean sheets in 29 matches, which is the joint-third highest amount in the league this season. He is a promising goalkeeper with a potentially big future ahead of him and there is no surprise that Cooper wants to keep him at the Liberty Stadium for even longer.

As reported by , the Swansea manager confirmed his desire to extend Woodman’s stay at the club. He said: ”We’d all love Freddie to stay for longer than the season. Whether that’s possible, we’ll have a look in the summer. I think he’d definitely like to. The affection the fans have shown Freddie, I think he really feels it and likes to show it back because it’s mutual.”

It is clear to see that Woodman and the Swansea faithful are enjoying a great relationship but is it in Newcastle’s best interests to let him move away from the club beyond the end of the season?

Martin Dubravka is currently Newcastle’s number one and is proving himself to be one of the league’s best goalkeepers. Woodman would find it difficult to push him for the starting spot just yet and would not benefit from sitting on the bench.

It might be beneficial for both clubs to send the young keeper out on loan again next season. Swansea is the most obvious choice, but Newcastle may want Woodman to get some experience at the top level before introducing him to the first team. A decision could depend on where Swansea finish this season.
