‘Surprised’… Danny Murphy left shocked after what one Manchester United man did in the FA Cup today
Danny Murphy has admitted that Erik ten Hag’s reluctance to make any changes to his Manchester United side in today’s FA Cup clash at Newport County ‘surprised’ him.
Man United faced a spirited Newport side in the fourth round on Sunday and managed to pick up a 4-2 victory in South Wales.
Erik ten Hag’s men looked set to cruise to a comfortable win after bagging two goals in the opening 15 minutes. Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo were on target and United were dominating the game before Bryn Morris netted a stunner to get Newport back into the game.
The League Two outfit then threatened to cause an upset as Will Evans levelled things up in the 47th minute.
Antony restored the Red Devils’ lead just 20 minutes later but Newport continued to cause United problems.
It took Ten Hag until the 81st minute to turn to his bench, with Scott McTominay replacing Casemiro. But Danny Murphy was shocked to see the Dutchman resist the urge to use his bench up until that point.

Murphy surprised by Ten Hag during United’s FA Cup win at Newport
Speaking on ’s coverage of the game, Murphy questioned Ten Hag’s reluctance to turn to his bench on Sunday afternoon.
“The three [Newport] players going off can all be proud of their performances, they’ve given it absolutely everything and proved that they can compete,” Murphy said.
“I’m surprised Erik ten Hag hasn’t made a few changes of his own yet.”

The hosts were pushing for an equaliser in the latter stages of the game and it was a surprise to see Ten Hag hold off with his substitutions.
Yet, he did make five changes after the 80th minute, with the likes of Harry Maguire, Jonny Evans and McTominay all getting some minutes under their belts.
Rasmus Hojlund eventually wrapped up the win for United in stoppage time. But it was yet another unconvincing display from Ten Hag’s men.
Nevertheless, United avoided an upset and booked their place in the fifth round. They will undoubtedly be hopeful of going one better after losing last year’s final to Manchester city.
